Para/Site Art Space, Hong Kong’s leading independent, non-profit arts organization, has been awarded a Springboard Grant by the Advisory Committee on Arts Development(ACAD) in Hong Kong. It is the only visual arts organization to receive the grant, which is part of a new support scheme announced by ACAD in June last year.

The new grant scheme is part of the Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme, a program built around the development and promotion of "local artists and arts groups."

The Springboard Grant is a matching grant that requires the recipient to provide equal funding, with a minimum one quarter to come from non-government funding.

When announcing the establishment of the grant program Chairman of ACAD, Mr Chung Shui-ming, said, "The Funding Scheme seeks to fund applications that contribute to the objectives of program/contents development, audience building, arts education and capacity development. It aims to supplement existing funding schemes for the arts and, in particular, to provide new funding opportunities to enhance capacity development for promising arts groups and practitioners, and activities/projects of a large scale and/or of a long time frame."

Since its founding in 1996, Para/Site has established itself as a leading voice for alternative cultural development in the region, representing Hong Kong in the 50th (2003) and 53rd (2009) Venice Biennale as well as the 4th Gwangju Biennale (2002.) The institution is responsible for bringing influential artists to Hong Kong such as Ai Weiwei, Dennis Oppenheim, Franz Ackermann, Tsang Kin-wah and Vito Acconci.

Speaking to BLOUIN ARTINFO Hong Kong Para/Site executive director/curator Cosmin Costinas said “the Springboard Grant allows us at Para/Site to continue to remain faithful to our promise to the Hong Kong public to be one of the leading independent art institutions in Asia.”

The ACAD has awarded HK$2.8 million to Para/Site which Costinas says will go into “the development of the structural integrity of the institution, funding the development of all the components that are not exhibition based such as conferences, books and research projects.”

Para/Site will be eligible to apply for the grant again this year with a possible HK$4.5 million available in funding. There is a maximun funding period of three years with a HK$7.5 million cap.

Although clearly pleased with the support Costinas did sound a note of caution: "the Hong Kong Government needs to be clear that matching funds are great but they cannot provide this high level of funding and then just pull out completely. There must be an understanding on both sides about sustainability."

Jiang Shuo was born in 1958, Beijing. She studied sculpture at the Central Academy of Arts and Design, which is now under Tsinghua University. Jiang, as the first female sculptor in China, completed her master degree in 1985 and started her career in teaching sculpture at the Central Academy until 1989. Jiang, with her husband Wu Shao Xiang, emigrated to Austria and worked at their joint studio there. Jiang's works have been widely exhibited around the world, especially in Europe.

The sculpture that you are interested is titled Great Jump, it is one of her Red Guards Series. The Red Guards work follows in her folk art style but with the injection of a political theme to grab people's attention. The almost faceless guards with their wide-open mouths recall the period of turmoil in China when the spouting of slogans and mindless indoctrination was the path to survival. The sarcasm continues for the materialization that these red guard criticized during the Revolution, have now become their goals, to be pursued today.

As one of the contemporary artists, she uses the accent lost-wax casting technique which was widespread in Europe until 19th Century. Great Jump is sized: 170 x 110 x110 cm, was done in the year of 2008, edition of 8 pieces. The bronze sculpture is great for outdoor display and it comes with an original certificate directly from the artist. (please see the picture as attached ) The gallery price for this piece is SGD 162,500.

Jean Dubuffet: The Last Two Years Jan 20, 2012 - Mar 10, 2012

An exhibition featuring nearly twenty works from the final two bodies of work by Jean Dubuffet, who died in 1985. In 1983 Dubuffet unleashed an extended color palette across the canvas, removing the borders and a representational reference point. From February 1983 to February 1984, the artist painted the Mires, or “Test Patterns,” exclusively, meant to evoke in viewers a visceral reaction that might rid the mind of the teachings of culture and tradition so as to see with a naked eye. Dubuffet entitled his final series Non-Lieux, a legal term meaning neither guilty nor innocent—in effect, “no verdict.”

The American Folk Art Museum, which vacated its building next to MoMA last year and moved to a smaller storefront near Lincoln Center due to financial difficulties, is “reasonably secure” after selling the building on West 53rd Street and receiving contributions of about $3.5 million.

The news comes from Bloomberg Businessweek, which spoke to Monty Blanchard, the museum’s volunteer president:

“We’re committed to operating on a break-even basis for the indefinite future,” he told them.

The museum sold its building to MoMA for $31.2 million. They occupy their current space rent-free. The museum’s acting director, Linda Dunne, told Bloomberg, “The plus side of selling our building is that we are debt-free.”

Yesterday was the museum’s 50th anniversary.

80 ans après, les muraux de Diego Rivera sont de retour au MoMa de New York

Celle-ci rend hommage à l'extraordinaire aventure de Rivera et du MoMa au début du siècle dernier : peindre sur place et en un laps de temps très court une série d'oeuvres destinées à être le clou d'une rétrospective de l'artiste. "Ses muraux, par définition fixes, étaient impossibles à transporter pour l'exposition. Afin de résoudre ce problème, le musée avait fait venir Rivera à New York six semaines avant l'inauguration de l'exposition, lui fournissant un studio improvisé", explique le MoMa sur son site internet, à propos de la rétrospective de 1931. C'était la deuxième fois que le MoMa organisait une rétrospective, après celle dédiée au peintre français Henri Matisse.
Avec ses deux assistants, Rivera créa ainsi cinq "muraux amovibles" commémorant des épisodes de l'histoire du Mexique. Après l'inauguration de l'exposition, l'artiste réalisa trois autres oeuvres inspirées de New York, avec des images monumentales de la ville. L'exposition qui dura cinq semaines enregistra des nivaux records de fréquentation, selon le MoMa, qui souligne qu'à l'époque Diego Riviera "jouissait déjà d'une renommée internationale".
Parmi les cinq fresques murales sur l'histoire du Mexique, on trouve celle intitulée "Zapata líder agrario", où l'on voit le dirigeant révolutionnaire près d'un cheval blanc guider des paysans rebelles, tandis qu'un propriétaire terrien gît mort à ses pieds. Diego Rivera, qui épousa l'artiste mexicaine Frida Kahlo, était connu, tout comme elle, pour ses engagements politiques marqués à gauche.
L'exposition intitulée "Muraux pour le Musée d'Art moderne" comprend aussi des dessins, esquisses et archives liés au passage de Diego Rivera à New York entre 1931 et 1932.

Art Scene In MONTREAL in 2007? has it changed a lot?

Downtown Montreal is a pleasant mix of skyscrapers, good restaurants and funky storefronts, with plenty of young people, thanks to the presence of McGill University, and a reputation as Canada’s Sin City, thanks to a liberal attitude towards strip clubs. The downtown scene includes several museums and galleries as well. All this leads Claude Gosselin, longtime director of the Biennale de Montréal, May 10-July 8, 2007 -- more about this below -- to boost the city as the country’s artistic capital.
Currently at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal is "Once upon a Time Walt Disney: Sources of Inspiration for the Disney Studios," Mar. 8-June 24, 2007. Though the show is being sold as a big bunch of Mousketeering fun, in fact it’s a historical investigation into the artistic roots of Disney’s imagination, comparing his early cartoons to the Expressionist films of Fritz Lang and ending up with Destino, Salvador Dalí’s Disney collaboration from 1943 (which was only finally assembled and released in 2003).
Less than a mile away is the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, currently boasting "Bruce Nauman," May 26-Sept. 3, 2007, a touring show of neons organized by the Milwaukee Art Museum complemented by a retrospective selection of video and films, organized by curatorSandra Grant Marchand, plus the artist’s new room-sized One Hundred Fish Fountain (2005). The array of 97 suspended bronze fish in seven different forms, all spouting streams of water into a large, square provisional pool, the fountain -- owned by the Sender Collection -- is noisy, odd and a little nightmarish, like a lot of Nauman’s work.
The permanent collection also has its rewards, especially to the extent that it suggests a parallel art history, following familiar paths but with local practitioners. Thus, down in the lobby, the museum displays two new acquisitions, recent paintings by Montreal artist Dil Helebrand (b. 1974) and Vancouverite Étienne Zack (b. 1976), that look like they might come from the Leipzig School.
Similarly, in a gallery upstairs is an eye-popping installation of Op Art from the mid-1960s by Yves Gaucher, Claude Tousignant, Jacques Hurtubise and Guido Molinari, not the usual lineup. Interesting, too, is the way that the curator has contrasted these brightly colored, precisely done paintings with several dark, primitivist sculptures in wood and metal. Also on view nearby is a 1991 painting by the late Larry Rivers with stenciled words giving a French vocabulary lesson (c’est le nez!).
But the energizing event for the local art scene at present is the fifth "Biennale de Montreal," which was organized by Wayne Baerwaldt, former director of the Power Plant in Toronto and now head of the Illingworth Kerr Gallery at theAlberta College of Art and Design. Titled "Crack in the Sky," the show is installed at five different sites, notably the École Bourget, a former school building, and the Parisian Laundry, a beautiful two-storied loft-like structure of dark brick and industrial clerestory windows that is about three kilometers away.
Baerwaldt has given the show a strong Canadian complexion, reaching across the country to include artists from its far-flung and divergent provinces, often enlisting the help of local curators. The approach seems fairly progressive; apparently Montreal often plays in contrast to the ROC, that is, the rest of Canada.
In his selections, Baerwaldt reveals a taste for stage sets and dioramas. Among the participating Canadian artists are Graeme Patterson (b. 1980), whose impressive, large scale models of buildings from a Saskatchewan ghost town fills the ground floor of the Parisian Laundry, and David Hoffos (b. 1966), whose illusionistic nighttime dioramas, viewed through holes in a wall and enlivened with projected video figures, are marvels of verisimilitude.
Kent Monkman, an artist who was born in Winnipeg in 1965, makes drawings, photographs, paintings and installations that are witty mash-ups of 19th-century views of what Canadians call "First Nation" culture (i.e., Native Americans) with a comic gay sensibility, notably through burlesques involving a character Monkman has named Miss Chief Eagle Testickle.
The biennale also includes muscular drawings narrating Eskimo life by Annie Pootoogook, an Inuit who is also included in Documenta 12, and drawings by Paul P., who was born in Ontario, narrating a homoerotic Arcadian fantasy.
The "electroclash" musician known as Peaches, whose underground hit is titled Fuck the Pain Away (and who performed on the beach last December as part of the festivities at Art Basel Miami Beach), contributed a kind of mini-Quonset-hut structure of fur, lined on the inside with bras, underwear and other fetish items that fans had thrown on stage during her performances. Visitors to the show could crawl inside and watch a video of a Peaches "fandemonium."
Out-of-towners include the Irish artist Theo Sims(b. 1969), who has created a perfect, life-size replica of an Irish pub as part of the show, andVirgil Marti, who contributes two hanging screens of gilded bones made of cast resin. Downstairs in the basement of the École Bourget is playing a new ten-minute film by the Danish artist Jesper Just. Titled A Vicious Undertow, the black-and-white movie tells an allusive and mournful tale of forsaken love, with no dialogue other than whistling. The soundtrack includes an evocative new arrangement of songs by the Clash and theMoody Blues, notably Knights in White Satin.
Another highlight of the biennale is an exhibition of works by David Altmejd, who was born in Montreal but now lives in London, at the Galerie de L’UQAM -- a show given added interest by Altmejd’s selection for the Canadian pavilion at the forthcoming 52nd Venice Biennale. Altmejd’s elaborate neo-Goth constructions are undeniably weird -- sort of like Alberto Giacometti’s 1933Palace at 4 A.M. with added hair and mirrors and fur and plastic flowers and crystals.
One of the most recent works at L’UQAM, The Hunter (2006), is a kind of large hollow skull shape, inset with mirrored cubes and boxes, adorned with taxidermied squirrels, pine cones and oak tree branches, as well as odds and ends of leatherman regalia.
Time was growing short, but I had an hour or so to dash through the "Belgo," a funky five-story building on Rue Sainte-Catherine filled with commercial galleries, artist co-ops and artist’s studios. Pierre-François Ouellette Art Contemporain has some alluring monochrome watercolors of "hunting scenes" by the aforementioned Kent Monkman, a nude chief in high heels sitting on a nag, for instance. The watercolors are $3,800 Canadian.
Galerie SAS is featuring, with the assistance ofElle Quebec and Lancôme Paris, among others, an exhibition called "Mille Femmes Montreal de Maraval," an impressive collection of portraits of women looking rather flirty, since they’re all photographed looking over one shoulder, as if turning to smile at a wolf whistle!
At La Galerie B-312, the artist Randall Anderson has done an installation featuring a wall covered with randomly arranged bright sheets of paper and a striding statue of a kind of white golem, constituted of fluttering paper pieces himself. Not dissimilar to Umberto Boccioni’s classic 1913 bronze, Unique Forms of Continuity in Space, Anderson’s figure is titled Zoom! The price is $12,000 Canadian.
And at Galerie René Blouin is an exhibition of sculptures and drawings by Patrick Coutu, who seems to take some of his inspiration from the strangely gemlike forms of coral. One marquee piece, titled Chute, is made of aqua-toned cement and resembles a large upside-down branch dripping icicles or moss. The price of Chute is $12,000 Canadian.
Artist-run nonprofits are a strong force in Canadian art, and the Belgo building contains the headquarters of several. One is a 22-year old center for emerging artists called Skol -- the name is derived from that Scandinavian drinking toast, and represents the significant role that "celebratory cheer" plays in the group’s activities. Another sign of the anti-commercial approach, perhaps, is the guest book by Matthieu Lefévrethat has with pages of black paper, so that any signatures are next to invisible.
On view in the gallery is a sprawling group exhibition of about 90 works on paper, photos and other things that can be pinned to the wall. The result of an open call for proposals and a yearlong "collective construction," the show is designed as an investigation of "expressions of individual impulses and a testament to the source and origin of all artistic projects. It is titled "As If All Were Well."

La Promenade des Artistes, organisée par le Westchester Accueil, permet à ses membres et à ceux de l'Accueil New York de présenter leur travail dans leur domaine (artistique ou artisanal). Elle se déroule sur deux jours, traditionnellement au début du mois de mai, à Larchmont ou Mamaroneck.

Des maisons, regroupées dans un même quartier, sont ouvertes bénévolement aux artistes pour leur permettre d’exposer et de vendre leurs créations.

Chacun doit s’adapter à un espace limité, aménagé selon ses besoins, en apportant chevalets, tréteaux, éclairages ou autre, après validation auprès de l’équipe organisatrice qui est l’intermédiaire entre les exposants et les maîtresses de maison. La convivialité et la bonne humeur sont l’essence de la Promenade des Artistes.

Une quinzaine de jours avant l’évènement, un café permet aux exposants et aux maîtresses de maison de se rencontrer.

La participation demandée à chaque exposant finance la publicité faite par annonces dans les journaux locaux, affiches et édition de cartons d’invitation. Les exposants sont invités à faire connaitre l’évènement en diffusant les cartons ou en utilisant leurs propres canaux de communication.

Les exposants s’engagent à reverser 15% des bénéfices de leurs ventes et des commandes prises pendant la Promenade au profit d’associations caritatives choisies par le Westchester Accueil.

Un carnet à souches est remis à chacun pour faciliter la comptabilité de la Promenade.

Un website Promenade des Artistes permet de présenter l’événement ainsi que les artistes et créateurs qui y participent.

We present this elephant in its full strength and glory as a metaphor, embodying the might of "New Asia", representing the global shift from West to East with the emergence of the powerful forces of China and India. The elephant has been symbolically split into two halves, each side representing China and India respectively; Mao and Gandhi, being the two major icons of each of these nations, are seen to be initiating a narrative of what challenges New Asia faces as it marches ahead ruling the 21st century. This elephant embodies an enthusiasm for our New Asia and our modern world and I hope it shall be a very colorful and somewhat thought provoking part of the first ever Asian installation of The Elephant Parade in Singapore.

Le développement durable est le grand défi des années à venir. Si nous sommes tous concernés par les questions environnementales, les pays les plus industrialisés (la France et les Etats Unis dans le peloton de tête), parce qu’ils rejettent énormément de gaz à effet de serre, seront les acteurs majeurs de la révolution verte à venir. Pour en parler, le Lycée Français de New York (LFNY) reçoit Brice Lalonde, militant écologiste historique, fondateur de Génération Ecologie et ancien ministre de l’environnement dans le gouvernement socialiste de Michel Rocard. Il est depuis février 2011 le coordonnateur exécutif de la Conférence des Nations Unies sur le développement durable (Rio+20).

It will be followed by a Q&A with Producer and Alumnae Virginie Silla-Besson (89’). “The Lady” is the story of Burmese pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi from 1989 to 1999, year when her husband dies. The film is based on a script written by novelist Rebecca Fray and was shot in Thailand in 2010. The movie is in English. The Q&A will be in both languages with translation from French to English available.

Lady Liberty ou les 125 ans d’une amitié

Coincée sur son île, Lady Liberty est mise sur un piédestal. Référence ultime pour les voyageurs approchant le Nouveau Monde, elle éclaire leur arrivée. Symbole de l’Amérique, elle existe sous toutes les formes, du décapsuleur à l’aimant en passant par des reproductions postées un peu partout dans le monde.

Mais Miss Liberty est avant tout une femme qui vit avec son époque. Elle fait son cinéma sous la direction de Chaplin puis Hitchkock avant de jouer aux côtés des chasseurs de fantômes. Elle inspire Warhol, copine avec Michael Jackson en l’accueillant sur sa torche et se laisse dialoguer avec une autre statue sous la plume de O. Henry. Elle se déshabille dans les rue de New York tout en mâchouillant un chewing-gum; lançant son immense culotte et manquant d’écraser une New-Yorkaise. Pourtant, la jeune femme aussi âgée qu’une grande marque de soda made in US, n’en est pas moins française.

Plus qu’un symbole de l’amitié franco-américaine, cette statue est l’incarnation d’une des valeurs les plus importantes pour les deux pays: la liberté.

The cut will affect next year's Basic Program Support grants

by ArtsWestchester, upon which the Neuberger Museum of Art and many

other arts organizations rely.

The Board of Legislators can add - and delete - items before they approve
the budget.

We have a small window of time to convince them to restore funding
for the arts, but we need your help.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Legislators need to see that their constituents want them to support the arts.
Here's what you can do:

Your presence matters!

We have 2 very exciting announcements for Artexpo New York 2012.

1. Artexpo will run March 22-25, 2012 at Pier 92 concurrently with the Architectural Digest Home Design Show.

The Architectural Digest Home Design Show, produced by MMPI and co-sponsored by The New York Times, is a four-day event that features hundreds of manufacturers, retailers and designers showcasing products and services for the high-end residential design market. The 2011 Show’s attendance and spending patterns defied current trends as more than 40,000 designers, architects, retail stores, set decorators, visual merchandisers, members of the media, celebrities and affluent consumers shopped the 10th-annual event.

2. Artexpo will return to a 4 day event with Trade days scheduled for Thursday and Friday! This allows more time to spend with the ever important publishers, gallery owners, artists, designers, architects, consultants and retailers.

These positive changes will result in new dates and a new floor plansituated on Pier 92. The show will take place March 22-25, 2012.

Fluxus—which began in the 1960s as an international network of artists, composers, and designers―resists categorization as an art movement, collective, or group. It also defies traditional geographical, chronological, and medium-based approaches. Instead, Fluxus participants employ a “do-it-yourself” approach, relating their activities to everyday life and to viewers’ experiences. Offering a fresh assessment of Fluxus, the show and its installation are designed to encourage multiple interpretations, exploring what they can teach us about our own position in the world and the works’ relationships to key themes of human existence. Fluxus and the Essential Questions of Life features over 100 works, including documents, objects, event scores (short scripts outlining actions to be performed), and Fluxkits (collections of scores, games, and ephemera). Curated by Jaquelynn Baas and organized by the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, the exhibition draws extensively on the George Maciunas Memorial Collection at the Hood and is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.

Thank you for your e-mail, which, if it is under three (3) sentences long, I have read. Owing to the large volume of e-mails I’m receiving at this time, please note that it will sometimes take up to fourteen (14) calendar days, though sometimes longer (and sometimes much longer), to respond to your e-mail; in the interim, please rest assured that I am attempting to address, resolve, or think about the matter you have described, unless, of course, I’m avoiding the matter entirely. Some possible reasons for this include:

—Thinking about the matter gives me a headache.

—Thinking about the matter takes longer than forty-five (45) seconds.

—Thinking about the matter is simple enough, and takes less than forty-five (45) seconds, but, when combined with all the other e-mails in my in-box, it creates a synergy of matterdom, exacerbating the headaches mentioned at the beginning of this list.

Please note that if your e-mail is more than three (3) sentences in length I have read the first three (3) sentences, skimmed the opening paragraph, and sort of eyeballed the rest of it. Please do not expect a response to your e-mail anytime soon, if at all, for I am not a mind reader, and therefore cannot guess the nature of anything beyond the first three (3) sentences. For those of you who continue to insist on sending e-mails longer than three (3) sentences, here is a Wikipedia entry on haiku. Reformat your e-mails accordingly, as in this example:

               I am busy now;
               The Internet has stolen
               So much precious time.

Under certain circumstances, you may feel as though you cannot express the matter at hand in less than three (3) sentences. Below, please find some possible reasons for this, and their solutions:

—If your e-mail attempts to provide a detailed update on what you’ve been doing since high school, or to “fill me in” on a time period longer than five (5) calendar years, then please call the number provided at the bottom of the e-mail.

—If your e-mail refers to nuanced emotional matters relating to but not limited to a current, prior, potential, or perceived romantic involvement, then please call the number provided at the bottom of the e-mail.

Should you receive a speedy one-to-two-word response, please do not read anything into it. More often than not, such a response doesn’t even correspond to the content of your e-mail. Dana Schutz and Jeremy Sigler

Artist Dana Schutz speaks with poet, sculptor, and critic Jeremy Sigler as they bring together their unique perspectives to consider Schutz's work of the last ten years found in the exhibition Dana Schutz: If the Face Had Wheels.

Sigler is Associate Editor of Parkett and has published five books of poetry, most recently, Crackpot Poet (Black Square Editions/Brooklyn Rail 2010).

In his 2007 Brooklyn Rail review of her work, he compared the simultaneous brutality and resolve of many of Schutz's canvases to an array of his own emphatic art and pop culture references.

Dana Schutz received a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2000 and an MFA from Columbia University in 2002. She has had solo exhibitions at the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland; and Site Santa Fe; and has been included in group exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and The Saatchi Gallery, London; and international events such as the Venice and Prague Biennales.

Free and co-sponsored by the Purchase College School of Art Design as part of the Visiting Artist Lecture Series. Program will be held in the School of Art Design building.

Visit the exhibition before or after the program. The Museum will remain open through 6:30 pm and following the talk.

Writer Joan Tapper and photographer Gale Zucker will discuss how the DIY movement has evolved beyond simply creating for pleasure to Craft Activism, or “craftivism,” in which craft of all types can be a much larger statement in a community. Following a book signing of Craft Activism: Ideas and Projects Powered by the New Community of Handmade and How You Can Do It Yourself, we will be making woven recycled plastic bag purses inspired by Austin artist Virginia Fleck.

About Jane's Carousel..on view in DUMBO

NEW YORK CITY - In the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge, strains of old-fashioned music from an organ float over the river, mingling with the sound of children's laughter. It's coming from one of the happiest little spots in New York City: Jane's Carousel, a twinkling antique jewel that spins in a see-through pavilion on the banks of the East River. One afternoon in early autumn, just about everybody seemed enthralled by the rise and fall of the 48 hand-carved wooden horses as they rode in circles over and over in Brooklyn Bridge Park. It was mostly young children emerging from naptime with their mothers, but even some hipsters in skinny jeans and Ray-Ban Wayfarers decided to stop and take a ride, hanging their heads back and grinning as they went.
"I think the lights, the music, the horses, it just brings out joy in everybody," says Jane Walentas, the artist who spent years restoring the carousel to its original splendor.

Jane's Carousel is the latest attraction to hit DUMBO, an offbeat waterfront neighborhood that is slowly evolving from a deserted manufacturing zone to an upscale hipster hangout with art galleries, boutiques and million-dollar condos. DUMBO stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, and the carousel is located right between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, which span the river and connect the two New York City boroughs. The carousel is housed in a clear acrylic pavilion, designed by the architect Jean Nouvel, and it offers stunning — and weatherproof — views of the bridges, the water and Manhattan across the way.

But Jane's Carousel is no native New Yorker. It was built by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company in 1922, and for much of the 20th century, it stood in Idora Park, a popular spot in Youngstown, Ohio, then a prosperous city of steel mills. In 1975, it became the first carousel ever listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Youngstown fell on hard times with the decline of the steel industry in the 1970s, and after Idora Park was wrecked in a fire, the carousel went up for auction in 1984.
At the time, Jane Walentas' husband, real estate developer David Walentas, had been commissioned to develop the land that eventually became Brooklyn Bridge Park, and he'd asked his wife to help him find a carousel to install there. The Idora Park carousel was on the verge of being sold off piecemeal when the couple placed a $385,000 bid to buy the whole thing.

"We didn't think we had a chance at it, because there was a very well-known developer in Youngstown who we assumed was going to buy it and save it for them," Jane Walentas recalled. "That didn't happen."

Walentas gets choked up when she talks about the people from Youngstown who have come by the busload just to see the restored carousel since it opened in September.

"It really shaped their lives," she says. "You know they had their birthday parties on the carousel, they got engaged on the carousel, their first date."

Walentas spent nearly 25 years working on the carousel, scraping off layers of paint with a knife to reveal the original paint and beautiful carvings. Along with a team of six people, Walentas rewired the carousel with 1,200 lights, cut new mirrors for the horses' bridles and replaced the jewels embedded throughout it.

"The paint was so fragile and broken," she said. "And there were a lot of carpentry repairs that needed to be made."

The carousel then sat unused for another four years in a DUMBO gallery, visible through a window from the street, while Brooklyn Bridge Park was completed, the agreement to install the carousel was finalized, and the carousel pavilion was designed and built.

In the month since it opened, the carousel has already become a welcome addition to the neighborhood's draws for tourists, which include Jacques Torres' chocolate shop at 66 Water St. and a stone marker on the pier where George Washington and his troops fled by boat to Manhattan after the disastrous Battle of Brooklyn in 1776. At night, the carousel runs a light show every hour, projecting the dancing shadows of horses onto the walls and ceiling of the pavilion. The lights can be seen from across the river.

Craig Whitney, 68, was admiring the carousel with his wife as they basked in the sun on a nearby bench, taking in the tranquil scene.

"It's been so perfectly restored. And in this setting, it's just magnificent," he said. "It's got sort of a hurdy-gurdy organ in it. That's something that was made a hundred years ago, and people still like to hear the sound. I think there's a romantic appeal to things like this from the past that make you feel good."
